About silkpivopmy

The idea for silkpivopmy emerged from conversations with watch owners who felt uncertain about where to take their timepieces for service. Many described experiences where they received vague explanations, aggressive sales pitches for unnecessary work, or were simply left wondering whether their watch had been handled with care. We saw an opportunity to approach this differently.

Our workshop in Kuala Lumpur focuses on mechanical movements, particularly Swiss calibres from manufacturers like ETA, Sellita, and Valjoux. These are the movements found in many everyday mechanical watches, and we've developed familiarity with their characteristics through repeated exposure and reference to calibre-specific documentation. This allows us to conduct services methodically, checking components against known tolerances and replacing parts according to established wear patterns.

The name "silkpivopmy" reflects two qualities we value in watch work. The silk thread — impossibly fine, requiring steady hands and patience to handle — represents the delicacy of components like the hairspring, where a fraction of a millimetre can determine whether a watch gains or loses minutes each day. The pivot — the point on which something turns — represents both the physical arbors in a movement and the careful pivoting between inspection and action that good repair requires.

We're not attempting to service haute horlogerie complications or manufacture-specific proprietary calibres. Our focus is narrower: providing competent, transparent service for the Swiss movements that many watch owners encounter. We explain what we find, provide realistic timelines, and discuss costs before beginning work. If a watch requires specialized attention beyond our scope, we'll say so rather than attempt work we're not equipped to handle properly.

Located on Jalan Imbi, our workshop is accessible for consultations and drop-offs. We maintain working hours that allow for unhurried conversations about your watch, and we're happy to explain our findings without obligation. Watch ownership should be straightforward and enjoyable, and we hope to contribute to that experience through careful work and clear communication.

Our Standards

Proper Tool Usage

We use appropriate tools for each task — from rodico for dust removal to precision screwdrivers sized correctly for movement screws. Improvised tools can damage delicate components.

Documentation Reference

We maintain technical documentation for common calibres, including lubrication charts and tolerance specifications. This ensures consistency across services.

Adequate Time Allocation

Multi-day regulation periods are standard in our process. Rushing through timing adjustments produces unreliable results that may drift days after delivery.

Clear Communication

We explain findings in plain language and provide cost estimates before proceeding. Clients should understand what work is being recommended and why.

Secure Handling

Watches are stored in a secured area when not actively being worked on. Each piece is tracked through our service process and returned in appropriate packaging.

No-Pressure Environment

Consultations are conducted without sales pressure. You're welcome to take time to consider recommendations or seek additional opinions.

What We Value

Precision in Movement Work

Watch movements function within very tight tolerances. A hairspring coil that touches an adjacent turn, a pivot hole that has become elongated through wear, or a barrel arbor that no longer maintains consistent tension — each of these small irregularities can produce significant timekeeping errors. Our work focuses on identifying these issues through careful examination and addressing them with appropriate techniques. This requires patience, steady hands, and a willingness to work methodically rather than rush to completion.

Transparency in Process

When you bring a watch to us, we'll examine it and explain what we find — whether that's a simple adjustment need, a component requiring replacement, or a situation where the watch would be better served elsewhere. We provide written estimates that outline recommended work and associated costs. If additional issues emerge during disassembly, we'll contact you before proceeding. You should understand what's being done to your watch and why it's being done that way.

Respect for Client Knowledge

Some clients arrive with extensive knowledge of their movement's architecture; others simply know their watch isn't keeping time properly. Both deserve the same quality of service and communication. We adjust our explanations to match your familiarity with mechanical watches, answering questions at whatever level of technical detail is useful. Your understanding of watch mechanics doesn't affect the care your timepiece receives.

Acknowledgment of Limitations

We're equipped to handle common Swiss calibres and certain types of repairs within those movements. We're not equipped to service every movement that exists, nor do we attempt to. If your watch contains a complication we haven't worked with, or if it requires tools or parts we don't maintain, we'll direct you to someone more suitable rather than attempt work beyond our experience. Honesty about capabilities protects both the watch and the client relationship.

We'd Be Happy to Discuss Your Watch

Whether you have questions about a potential service or would like to arrange a consultation, please reach out. We'll respond thoughtfully and without obligation.
